How would we describe Elijah Mikaelson? As a gentleman. He is a dashing and debonair gentleman with the etiquette of a first class passenger aboard a luxury streamliner and the fearlessness of William Wallace charging into battle upon the back of a sleek steed. Oh — and he’s got a set of locks on him that make even curly-hair beauty, Katherine Pierce, green with envy. (Click here for a rundown on the evolution of his fashionable ‘dos.)

So what sort of hairstyles can we expect to see Elijah sporting in The Vampire Diaries Season 4 — especially with an exciting 11th century flashback episode to look forward to? Wigs…lots and lots of them! Here’s what Daniel Gillies dished to MTV News:

“I’ve had so many numerous haircuts on this thing. I feel like an accessory sometimes,” he joked. “I feel like the Potato Head-vampire. I think this was my fifth hairstyle? And as we venture further through history, we’re only going to find more absurdities upon my crown. The second to last one I had I adored, because I sort of looked somewhere between a Viking and an elf. This last one I looked like a roadie for the Grateful Dead in the 11th century.”
