Keeping a television series fast-paced, exciting, and suspenseful is indeed an arduous task — especially when the said show is about to enter its fourth season. However, when you’ve got a showrunner as diligent as Julie Plec and a team of writers as creative and gifted as the ones on The Vampire Diaries, maintaining a perfect balance of momentum and poignant moments becomes 100% achievable. Here’s Julie’s take on TVD’s success and her sentiments about upcoming episodes in Season 4:
“When it got to season three, we thought, “Gosh, we really did it well for two years and now’s the time to maybe rest a little” but instead, we wanted to work harder because we wanted it to be even better. When it’s all said and done, as we go into our fourth season, there’s not a single episode of Vampire Diaries where I would hang my head low.”
Still, despite producing hours upon hours of quality entertainment, every writer struggles at some point with an idea or plot point. Check out which episode Julie claims gave her the most trouble during Season 3:
“Episode eight [of season three] about the Originals, “Ordinary People,” was difficult because you don’t realize – until you sit down to tell the origin story of a whole species – just how hard it is to decide what story it is you want to tell. We struggled to pull that episode together on the page and we did it in about five minutes. We were starting episode eight and we did not have a script that was complete the day we started shooting it so we had to write around the clock to make sure production could keep shooting.”

Whoa. That situations sounds mega stressful but, if it makes Julie feel any better, we wouldn’t have even known anything was amiss because “Ordinary People” was one of the best Vampire Diaries episodes of the third season. The flashbacks, featuring the Original family as Vikings who left their homeland and moved to Mystic Falls, were simultaneously informative, eerie, and heart-wrenching — which is just the way we like our supernatural drama!
