There’s no denying that the 2012 London Olympics Closing Ceremony was full of marvelous musical moments. From a Spice Girls reunion to Jessie J getting in touch with her inner disco queen to Monty Python legend, Eric Idle, participating in Bhangra festivities, the event teemed with energetic performances and fun surprises. However, none took our breaths away quite like Kate Bush’s remixed version of “Running Up That Hill” that played during a montage of athletes battling it out in the heat of competition and while performers (literally) fashioned an actual hill from props on stage. Although the quirky tribute was not televised in the United States, viewers found the footage online and were immediately taken by Kate’s rewrite of her cult classic. (Watch it over at Gawker!)
And as Vampire Diaries fans, we admittedly geeked out upon hearing it. All of a sudden were were transported to a much simpler time in Mystic Falls — the pilot episode. Do you remember the laid-back, first season when the only threats lurking around town were Damon and the Fell’s church vamps? It all feels so long ago! In this world, Elena Gilbert was still a human, murderous Originals were nowhere in sight, and Aunt Jenna was alive and kicking. Moreover, it was the first day of classes and a mysterious stud by the name of Stefan Salvatore cruised onto campus while the pulse-racing beats of Placebo’s cover of “Running Up That Hill” trembled in the background. Swoon!
Thus, you can only imagine our sheer excitement and nostalgia when we heard Kate’s song pounding away during the closing ceremonies. (Grab a copy of this special Olympics track here and add it to your music collection.) There’s nothing quite like a trip down TVD memory lane to turn a standard television event into an unforgettable one!
So what do you think of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) 2012 REMIX”? As Vampire Diaries fan, are you still haunted by this beautiful song? Fess up in the comments!
