In the Season 3 finale episode of The Vampire Diaries — just like her father had done for in a fateful car crash years earlier – Elena Gilbert sacrificed her own well-being in order to save Matt Donovan. She remained stubborn and insisted that Stefan rescue Matt first, and her altruistic decision cost her her life when she ended up drowning in the lake under Wickery Bridge.
Well, as we all know by now, Elena isn’t technically dead. Dr. Meredith Fill had slipped some of Damon’s vamp blood into Elena’s system in order to heal her brain hemorrhage caused by Klaus. So what does this mean for poor Matt who has to trek forth with the knowledge that his childhood friend and former beau gave up her humanity just for him? Apparently, he’s going to be stricken with grief and this guilt will lead him to make some intense choices. Check out what TV Guide had to say about the matter in a recent television spoiler roundup:
Although Matt was essentially the reason that Elena died, he’ll also play an integral role in her transition. Let’s just say his guilt will lead him to do just about anything for her — especially when she needs to feed.
Uh-oh. This feeding situation could mean one of two things — either Matt allows Elena to sink her fangs into his neck (Buffy & Angel style!), or Matt pulls a Let The Right One In and lures in some other innocent human for Elena to snack on. We don’t know for sure yet but we can’t wait to find out — it’s going to be an intense scene!
