Sneak Peek Clip from The Vampire Diaries Season 4, Episode 1: Elena Wakes Up

Elena Gilbert wakes up - "Growing Pains" clipSunlight pouring through the window. A dulcet choir of pretty little birdies chirping hello. Hot guys surrounding her bed. Usually, these three things combined would make for a very pleasant way to wake up in the morning. However, in Elena Gilbert’s case, they’re nothing but minor details in the alarming nightmare she calls life — or more appropriately death considering how she drowned under Wickery Bridge in the Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale, “The Departed.” So what’s Elena’s reaction when she wakes up and discovers that she’s in transition? She panics. She cries. She suffers. Watch the “Growing Pains” clip below to witness the sheer anguish she experiences when Stefan and Damon tell her the upsetting news:

It’s important to note how the first thing Elena inquires upon finding out that she’s been drifting in and out of sleep ever since the car accident is if Matt Donovan is okay. Her touching gesture emphasizes how selfless she is when it comes to her friends and family. Moreover, the way she reacts to the news that she died and is on her way to sprouting fangs of her very own goes to show that she’s not a girl who’s hungry for power and eternal gratification. Elena never wanted to become a vampire. She clearly expressed this in Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries in “The Last Day” so the fact that she’s now facing her very worst fear is heart-wrenching to say the least!

Interestingly enough, Damon is positively seething with resentment towards his younger brother. He’s using Stefan as the scapegoat in the whole fiasco and it appears that Stefan is beating himself up over everything as well. True, Elena’s life was in Stefan’s hands at the time of the car crash and he made the conscious decision to obey her wishes to save Matt first. However, lots of factors contributed to this very moment, namely of Elena waking up in a state of panic, discovering that Dr. Fell injected her with Damon’s blood, and that that now she’s in transition because of all the events that transpired. So who’s to blame? Let’s discuss in the comments!

I don’t think just one person can be blamed for Elena’s death but more like several people. Then again Stefan didn’t know that Elena had vampire blood in her system and even if she hadn’t she would be dead for good. So we could say that it’s Dr. Fell’s fault for giving Elena the blood, Rebecca’s fault for running Matt’s truck off the bridge or Stefan’s fault for following Elena’s wishes. No matter who’s fault it is, this is going to make for one hell of an episode.
