Sunlight pouring through the window. A dulcet choir of pretty little birdies chirping hello. Hot guys surrounding her bed. Usually, these three things combined would make for a very pleasant way to wake up in the morning. However, in Elena Gilbert’s case, they’re nothing but minor details in the alarming nightmare she calls life — or more appropriately death considering how she drowned under Wickery Bridge in the Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale, “The Departed.” So what’s Elena’s reaction when she wakes up and discovers that she’s in transition? She panics. She cries. She suffers. Watch the “Growing Pains” clip below to witness the sheer anguish she experiences when Stefan and Damon tell her the upsetting news:
Interestingly enough, Damon is positively seething with resentment towards his younger brother. He’s using Stefan as the scapegoat in the whole fiasco and it appears that Stefan is beating himself up over everything as well. True, Elena’s life was in Stefan’s hands at the time of the car crash and he made the conscious decision to obey her wishes to save Matt first. However, lots of factors contributed to this very moment, namely of Elena waking up in a state of panic, discovering that Dr. Fell injected her with Damon’s blood, and that that now she’s in transition because of all the events that transpired. So who’s to blame? Let’s discuss in the comments!
I don’t think just one person can be blamed for Elena’s death but more like several people. Then again Stefan didn’t know that Elena had vampire blood in her system and even if she hadn’t she would be dead for good. So we could say that it’s Dr. Fell’s fault for giving Elena the blood, Rebecca’s fault for running Matt’s truck off the bridge or Stefan’s fault for following Elena’s wishes. No matter who’s fault it is, this is going to make for one hell of an episode.
