As a Winter Wonderland-themed party filled the streets of Mystic Falls, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) and Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) found themselves at odds with Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) over his plans for Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and his not-so-sire-bonded hybrids. However, spiteful at Caroline’s recommendation for an alternate plan, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) found a dramatic way to make it clear that she was 100% not on board and ultimately made the situation worse. Later, Klaus made a discovery that led to chaos and violence. (TEARS!) Meanwhile, while the wonderland quickly spiraled into a world of terror, Elena and Damon dropped by the snug Gilbert Lake House to help Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) battle his dangerous inner demons with the assistance of Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Professor Shane (David Alpay). Recap every single riveting moment from TVD episode 4.09 below!

The episode opens up with Damon and Elena in bed flirting. They are fully clothed but Damon thinks the experience would so much better if they were both naked. (Saucy!) The conversation takes a serious turn as they discuss whether or not their love is real, but she just wants to enjoy it more before testing the ‘being set free’ theory. Damon then reveals that Stefan knows about their new relationship….but not that Delena had crazy, back-scratching sex and that Damon gave his brother’s ex multiple orgasms. (Better keep that a secret…jinx.) Bonnie then interrupts their heart-to-heart by ringing up Elena to confirm plans for the Lake House. Elena tells her she’ll see her there and then invites Damon along as well.

Stefan pays Klaus a visit to inquire about the mysterious decoder sword. He finds the hybrid lord hard at work bossing poor Aidan around. “What I want is for you to do whatever I say without the attitude.” Klaus is really into maximizing the benefits of free labor and is forcing Aidan to play delivery boy for a really important package (cough Klaus’ artwork cough). Stefan drops an Abraham Lincoln joke about Klaus’s “slaves” and about his painting of post modern snowflakes. He thinks Klaus is lying about having found the sword in Italy. “Why would I lie to you, Stefan? We’re in this together,” Klaus reassures him and pulls out the sword from a safe in the wall. He then asks Stefan about being a martyr for Delena and basically moving out of his house to give Elena her space. Stefan doesn’t appear amused whatsoever and let’s Klaus know that this is not bonding session. (There seems to be enough “bonding” going around Mystic Falls these days without the former Ripper hopping on the bandwagon.)

Flash to a secret hybrid meeting. The baby hybrids are sick of being bossed around by Klaus and voice their concerns to Tyler. Luckily, Hayley has great timing and appears before them to announce that she has found a witch strong enough to perform the body jump spell. Ay yi yi!

Tyler tells Caroline about their master plan to encase Klaus’ essence in concrete and Caroline asks, “”Who’s dumb enough to volunteer their body to be a Klaus sublet?” Well, as it turns out, Tyler volunteered himself as tribute. Caroline is none too happy considering senior year means prom and graduation and homegirl needs her quarterback boo right by her side.

Elena and Damon pull up the Gilbert Lake House and spot Jeremy chopping logs. He grips onto the ax in his hand but luckily Bonnie comes racing outside and takes it away from him. “Do you trust me?” she asks. Jeremy responds, “Yea, I trust you.” Professor Shane appears in the back and Damon’s eyes narrow at the sight of Professor Shady Pants. They then climb out of the car and try to enter the house but, because Elena died, she needs an invitation. Jeremy invites her in and they share a touching moment (literally — she grazes his muscular arms which is weird but who can blame her). However, controlled by his instincts as a member of the exclusive Five hunter’s club, Jeremy tries to murder her via splinter but, luckily, Elena’s vamp reactions are impeccable and she ends up placing him in a choke hold. Good time, good times.

Stefan and his new BFF Caroline are talking on the phone about Klaus’ special sword that will allow them to decode Jeremy’s tats. Caroline then gets worried and confides to Stefan that Tyler and the hybrids are staging the revolution that very night. Stefan sighs because complications and snags always exist.

Mystic Falls residents are running around celebrating and tossing fake snowballs. LIttle do they know however, that the holiday season is not so merry and bright for everyone. Wait, scratch that — Klaus appears out of nowhere looking dapper in a suit. He then appeals to Caroline’s thirst for culture by reminiscing about Charles Dickens’ dark soul. She smiles, makes a quip about Tiny Tim’s crutches, and then assesses his lonely snowflake art. They flirt a bit about high school and how they’re being nice to each other all of a sudden. (It’s starting to seem less of an act for Care Bear at this point.) While Klaus is busy blushing over Car’s kind words, she sneakily texts Stefan to tell him that Klaus is at the Mystic Grill. So what does the youngest Salvatore brother do? He takes advantage of the opportunity to go snooping around Chez Hybrid. While poking his nose around Klaus’ (marvelous) belongings, he chats with Damon and then asks him about Elena and how she’s taking the whole being “set free” situation. Awkward alert because Damon didn’t actually get to that yet. He doesn’t multitask that well.

Back at the Lake House, Professor Shane ties Jeremy up and creates a detour for him so that he can choose love and protecting his sister over the conditioned hunter “must kill” response. Elena doesn’t know what to say to appeal to him but then she goes into a story about the Lake House making them feel like they’re parents were there with them and how they would have wanted them to stick together and to fight for each other no matter what.
Jeremy opens his eyes and Atticus asks him how he feels about Elena and he gets really honest — he goes off into this whole rant about how Elena is the reason everyone he has ever loved died and how she’s not really his sister and that he would kill her even that means dying himself. Elena looks teary eyed but Bonnie is like, “I feel ya, boo.”

Stefan and Caroline are plotting and Tyler is pissed off. He tells Stefan, “I don’t owe you anything.” He wants Tyler to back down from taking out Klaus and tries to prevent him from doing so but then the hybrid posse appears like some bad-ass crew from Step Up 2 The Streets and Tyler says, “Sorry. It doesn’t look like you have a choice.” Caroline looks horrified. Yikes.

Tyler leads Stefan and Caroline into the Lockwood sex den/werewolf lair cellar and leaves them there under the guard of the super strong hybrid army. Caroline is stunned and protests but Tyler wants her to be on his side for once and needs her support. She shuts her mouth and just stares at him with great concern.

“You’re not allowed to feel this sorry for yourself unless you’re sitting on a bar stool. Fortunately, I travel with a bar,” says Damon upon seeing Elena sitting all sad and photographed at the end of the dock. He sits next to her to keep her company and she decides to share a story about how the last time she was there she was with Stefan but, despite Jeremy’s harsh words, she is happy because she’s in love and wonders if it’s real or the sire bond talking. Damon looks troubled even though she is positively beaming.

Meanwhile, Atticus is still working on creating a detour of Little Gilbert aka Bulging Biceps Man. “Professor Shane has been dipping into the magical herbs a little too much.” Clearly, Damon is not a huge fan of Professor Shane but he does instruct Jeremy to attach his warm and fuzzy detour feelings onto someone else. Then, the situation gets awkward because the person is question is Bonnie — the girl whom he stills loves despite on cheating on her with ghost Anna. Bon Bon is startled at the idea and seems uncomfortable — but Jeremy is all for it.

Back on the dock, Professor Shane reveals to Elena that his wife and son died and he’s trying to figure out a way not to miss them. She appears touched by his personal story but then Damon walks out with an ax and wants to know why the supposedly altruistic teacher is looking for the vampire cure. Atticus is not interested in the cure but he does know where it is. Elena looks shocked…and simultaneously intrigued.
