And this time the supernatural showdown is happening inside the warm, cozy confines of…a church! Jeepers creepers! The picture above was recently posted in Entertainment Weekly’s Fall TV Preview — a special issue that hits newsstands this week — and it’s scaring the hell out of us. Not only is the setting a place that’s supposed to serve as a haven for all residents of Mystic Falls (although, technically, they did burn vampires there once) but also the depicted scene is one of absolute mayhem. Judging by the terrified and bewildered looks expressed by Stefan, Elena, and Matt, it’s as though everyone’s worst nightmare just came true. Additionally, there are frightened churchgoers cowering in panic all over the place.

Season Four begins with the knowledge that everything is changing. As Elena and her friends enter into the final stretch of high school before graduation sends them off on different paths, their bond to their home town of Mystic Falls takes on a deeper meaning when a new villain seems intent on destroying it.

So what’s the photo of? Here’s our theory: Taking into account that (almost) everyone’s decked out in black and that a lot of Mystic Falls High students are present, we’re betting someone organized a pleasant-turned-deadly funeral for Alaric Saltzman, history teacher extraordinaire by day vampire hunter by night. Either that or Elena wants to spend her (potentially) last day inside a church.
