There’s been so much focus on Elena Gilbert becoming a vampire, Alaric Saltzman dying, and Klaus taking over Tyler Lockwood’s body that many viewers (us included) have forgotten about the person who’s responsible for that terrible crash during the Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale — Rebekah Mikaelsen!
Overcome by grief of (supposedly) losing Klaus and the desire to stop running from slayers her whole life, Rebekah decided to take matters into her own hands and fight back. However, her version of fighting back involved standing in the middle of the road and claiming innocent lives. Bex thought she was doing the right thing by forcing Matt Donovan’s pickup truck straight off Wickery Bridge so as to kill Elena and consequently kill Alaric — the big, bad vamp who staked her hybrid brother. Unfortunately, whereas Matt survived thanks to Stefan, Elena didn’t and is now in transition. So how does a blonde cheerleader with fangs but no friends or family in Mystic Falls bounce back from wreaking such havoc and causing such tragedy? TVLine has the scoop:
On Rebekah’s Role as the ‘Mean Girl’ Queen Bee | “What I’m excited about with Rebekah [in Season 4], specifically, is that we have never had a true antagonist on a human/teenage level,” she noted. “We’ve never had our Valerie [from Beverly Hills, 90210] or our Amanda Woodward [from Melrose Place]. And with Rebekah, who is so vulnerable and damaged but has that tough exterior, we get to see a queen bee in action; we get to see a mean girl. As we get into the second half of their senior year, here’s Rebekah, still in Mystic Falls, heading back to school, completely ostracized from the community of people that she knows because of what she did to Elena and Matt [in the finale]. She’s completely loathed by the one guy [Matt] that she had a crush on, and also by her past love [Stefan]. What’s she going to do about that? How does a vampire, who has all kinds of mind control capabilities and sass, carve her way into the high school world when the people that we love hate her guts? Once she gets over the hump of being “World’s Most Hated” in the yearbook, how will she live? And what will her life be like?”
Well, now there’s a superlative no one would want — “World’s Most Hated.” To be honest, we can understand why she’s going to find herself spiraling into crazy mean girl status. Although we’re still bitter with Bex for doing what she did, we can’t help but empathize with her. She was turned into a vampire by her own father, her long-lost love Stefan rejected her, she’s lost many beloved siblings, and her own mother Esther betrayed her. Plus, no matter how hard she tries, the poor girl still has not attended a proper high school dance! Overall, we can’t wait to see her growth as a character on The Vampire Diaries Season 4 and witness her interactions with all the people she hurt during her impulsive moment of murky decision-making!
Do you think the Mystic Falls gang should forgive Rebekah in the long run? Do you feel bad for her or does she deserve to be ostracized by her peers? Post your feedback on Rebekah Mikaelsen in the comments!
