Mystic Falls is full of supernatural beings, death, and secret societies (we’re looking at you, Founder’s Council), but just like any other town it has its set of normal customs as well. For example, the towns residents routinely organize volunteer projects on the weekends and host annual parades, pageants, and movies in the town square. And at towards the conclusion of The Vampire Diaries Season 4, viewers might even get to enjoy another standard activity — an actual graduation and senior prom!

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, TVD executive producer and writer Julie Plec teased the possibility of a ceremony and the decisions Elena, Matt, Caroline, Tyler and Bonnie will have to face on the brink of young adulthood:

“[The] writers and I are really focusing on that time in your life as your adolescence is coming to an end, that milestone of graduation, and you are making decisions: Do I leave home for good? Do I stay? Can I part with this town that’s been so important to me? Do I part with these people who have been so important to me? Am I going out into the world and starting a life and growing up? Or am I gonna hide here where I’m comfortable even if it’s not the best place for me? There’s a lot of great questions that come along with graduation that our characters — both human and supernatural — are gonna be asking themselves about who they are, who they’re supposed to be, and what they’re supposed to do with their life moving forward.”

Additionally, Julie Plec dropped a few clues about another pivotal high school celebration — prom! Check it out:

“Prom. Hello. Pretty dresses. Corsages,” she jokes. “But it is gonna be nice. Paul’s right. We’re all growing with the show and we’re becoming adults, and we can only play high school for so long and be believable and also challenged. I think it’s definitely time, and it’ll be a good button for the end of the season and for the next phase of The Vampire Diaries.”

Another chance to play dress-up? Yes please! (Gotta love those fancy Mystic Falls dances!) Well, as avid Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans, we know how some of the most memorable episodes of Joss Whedon’s cult series were the ones that featured brief yet happy and heartfelt human moments. And if Buffy Summers’s prom (where she was honored as “Class Protector” and received a standing ovation from her classmates) and high school graduation ceremony (where she blew Mayor-Wilkins-turned-basilisk to smithereens and earned her diploma) were any indication — supernatural shows know how to make rites-of-passage situations utterly unforgettable. So, needless to say, we’re pretty damn excited to see how the Mystic Falls seniors toast their hellish years of slaying monsters of exams and survival from bloodthirsty creatures and murderous fiends scholastic achievements.

Are you pumped for Mystic Falls prom and graduation? Do you hope they actually come to pass? And which Vampire Diaries character do you think deserves their high school diploma and moment of glory more than anyone else? Post your feedback in the comments!

I love the episodes set at the dances, I am sure the prom will be no different. A co-worker mentioned how ridiculous it was that the characters still attend dances; when every one ends with something horrible happening. But in Mystic Falls, the supernatural is always interfering, so why let it stop them?
