There’s been so much buzz about Elena Gilbert’s transition into a vampire, Bonnie Bennett going Darth Vader Willow on everyone and Phoebe Tonkin putting the moves on Tyler Lockwood as the new chick in town, that we’ve forgotten about one of our very favorites — Matt Donovan! Last we heard, Mystic Falls’ All-American dreamboat was going to find himself in a quite the sticky situation with Damon Salvatore, who blames him for Elena’s miserable drowning.

If you figured Matty had it rough already — what with no family, health insurance, and  romance of his own — think again. During an interview with E! Online, Zach Roerig revealed heartwrenching news about his character: “There’s going to be a profound sense of guilt, but shadowing that is going be this overwhelming feeling of being loved. Matt hasn’t felt that kind of love since season one or if ever in his life. Matt’s going to [feel] guilty, but also because he’s been loved so much, earn his life everyday.” Hmm. Could he be referring to how Elena sacrificed her life for his in the waters beneath Wickery Bridge? Although we’re glad to hear that Matt will find a sliver of a silver lining in his troubled young life, we’re worried that this newfound love will lead him into doing something he’ll regret.

And Ian Somerhalder’s quote from Comic-Con 2012 about the poor blue-eyed lad’s predicament wasn’t all that reassuring either: “Matt’s gonna have a tough year. I’m not kidding you. Matt’s gonna have a really tough year. I feel bad for Matt actually. …He’s not gonna have a very good year.” Ay yi yi. Things aren’t looking good for him at all according to all the spoilers released but we’re praying and hoping and wishing for the best.
