In The Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale, “The Departed,” lots of people messed up in their well-intentioned attempts to save Elena Gilbert. Matt Donovan drugged her so as to lead her to safety without a struggle on her behalf — but then Rebekah ruined everything with her car crashing causing antics. Damon and Stefan Salvatore devised a plan to go after the town’s ultimate Big Bad, Alaric Saltzman, but all that did was leave Elena alone and susceptible to more dangers without them around to protect her. Likewise, when Stefan was saving Matt and Elena from the lake beneath Wickery Bridge, he decided to respect her wishes to save Matt first and she ended up drowning. However, perhaps the worst decision of all occurred at the beginning of the episode when, in an effort to save a teenage girl from dying from a brain hemorrhage, Dr. Meredith Fell slipped some vampire mojo into Elena’s bloodstream.

While Dr. Fell was merely employing a creative means to save another human life and didn’t know that Elena was going to die later that night, what she did is pretty much unforgivable in Elena’s perspective. After all, this was a girl who revealed to her vampire boyfriend in Season 2 that she never wanted to sprout fangs of her own. And after Damon force-fed her his blood in “The Last Day,” a lot of people sacrificed a great deal — including their lives such as her biological father, John Gilbert, did — in order to resurrect her while keeping her humanity intact after Klaus’ brutal ritual. So for a physician to go against the terms of the Hippocratic Oath and slip vamp blood into her system without her approval — well, let’s just say that’s not going to fly well when fresh vamp Elena (or Damon for that matter).

So is Meredith going, staying, being killed off — what in bloody tarnation is going to happen to the Mystic Falls doc after Elena awakens in her new, supernatural state? Here’s what Vampire Diaries Season 4 spoilers the show’s executive producer, Julie Plec, shared with Michael Ausiello over at TV Line:

“Meredith in the beginning is just trying to keep her head above water, realizing that she’s found herself dropped into this supernatural world she never really meant to get involved with.”

“She has a choice to make: Does she want to dive in head first and embrace it? Or does she want to pull back and say, ‘Hey you know what? Why don’t you guys leave me out of it.’ We’ll be seeing a little bit of her in the beginning of the season.”

To be fair, Dr. Fell succeeded in saving Elena — once from a life-threatening injury inflicted by Klaus and again after the drowning incident. Without the fast-thinking doc, Elena would be having a funeral rather than a fresh start. However, that being said, do you think she’s the main person to blame for this whole dilemma? Is what she did wrong or do you agree with her controversial medical practices? Post your feedback in the the comments!

I do not feel that Dr. Fell is totally to blame. There are a few people with “hands in the stew”. Rebekah was deliberate in her actions so I think most of the fault falls on her. Dr. Fell was trying to help. I think she had no mean intent involved.

Meredith isn’t not guilty for what happen to Elena but according to me she should probably stop using vampire blood to heal humans because someday-sooner than she thinks- she’s gonna pay the price of playing with fire.

I don’t blame Meredith, but she has to stop using vamp blood to save patients. Mystic Falls will be overrun by vamps, putting the few humans in danger.
