For aficionados of the horror genre (which most of us are), the title of The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 20 — “What Lies Beneath” — will certainly conjure up images of something other than bloodsucking creatures and hex-casting witches. Like say vengeful ghosts perhaps? In case you’re not familiar with the terrifying Robert Zemeckis movie starring Michelle Pfieffer and Harrison Ford, we’ll fill you in. The paranormal film follows the hauntings of a university scientist’s wife at their Vermont lake house. What begins as a frightening ghost story turns into a bone-chilling murder case as the wife begins to communicate with the dead to unravel segments of her mysterious past and to figure out who the spirit terrorizing her is….and the truth is gutwrenching to say the least. So what does this mean for TVD episode 5×20? Well considering how the upcoming installment of the show involves ghosts, dangerous secrets, and Damon’s version of Truth or
Truth Dare (to find out what Stefan and Elena are hiding from him), we’re already worried sick. Oh, and the gang is going to spend a weekend at Mr. Forbes’s cabin….And as we’ve learned throughout the years, aside from some steamy make-out sessions and Jeremy chopping logs, nothing good ever comes out of excursions to isolated regions.

When Tyler (Michael Trevino) turns up at the Salvatore house with the news that Markos’ (guest star Raffi Barsoumian) plan to break the witches’ curse puts Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in imminent danger, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) suggests they hide out in the remote cabin once owned by Caroline’s (Candice Accola) father. Once there, it becomes obvious to Caroline that Stefan and Elena are keeping a secret, so Damon (Ian Somerhalder) comes up with a parlor game designed to expose the truth. A ghostly presence at the cabin uses violence and fire to make itself known. Meanwhile, Matt (Zach Roerig) takes charge of Tyler’s plan to get information from one of the Travelers, and Bonnie (Kat Graham) continues to keep the truth about the Other Side from Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), despite warnings from Grams (guest star Jasmine Guy). Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Elisabeth R. Finch & Holly Brix (#520).
