Zach Roerig Previews Matt Donovan's Role in The Vampire Diaries Season 4

Zach Roerig - Vampire Diaries Season 4 video interviewThe Vampire Diaries Season 4 premieres on The CW on October 11, but until then we’ve got plenty of goodies from the show’s cast and crew to satiate your appetites (for the time being). And today’s treat? A new video interview of Zach Roerig discussing the tragic events that occurred at the end of “The Departed” as well as what’s next for Matt Donovan considering the only reason Elena was in his truck to begin with was because he had drugged her (via a warm cup of tea) and fled with her to safety! As viewers know all too well by know, what ended up happening to the two of them was as far from “safe” as ever.” Watch and learn about what’s to come:

If you’re unable to watch the video, fret not because we’ve written it all out for you below. Here’s what Zach had to say about the devastating car accident that happened at Wickery Bridge in the Vampire Diaries Season 3 finale:

“For me, for my character, season 3 ended kind of [traumatically]. For Becca trying to kill Elena wrecks my car off the bridge. We worked for a long time under water in this enormous swimming pool — [which] is actually used to train divers for police [work] — so they submerged this truck underwater [and] built the bottom of the pool to look like a river bed. It was literally twelve hours a day — I think we did two days of filming — and the majority of the time we were underwater waiting for Paul [as Stefan] to come down and save me. But he did. [I'm assuming] it was very difficult [since he] had to be weighted down – ahh it was a trip! Instead of me dying, Elena [had] Stefan to save my life and as a result she becomes a vampire.”

Zach then drops hints about how Elena’s death will affect Matt’s growth as a character:

“I think this season would probably be the most different of all [four] mainly because Elena is a vampire now so…I don’t know what that means for me though. I’m still a human — which I want to stay human. Because Matt does have a very very strong weapon, and that is a moral compass. Matt is the only character that truly lives by a moral compass. A lot of the times certain characters have to stop and think about the right thing to do [whereas] Matt’s reaction is to constantly and inherently [doing] what he believes is the right thing to do.”

So tell us, gentle viewers: Do you hope that Matt Donovan remains human on the show? Or do you hope to see him evolve into a super hot beastie like Damon and Stefan Salvatore?
